If someone said that Americanah by Chiamanda Adichie was a romance novel, I would tell them they are sadly mistaken and should perhaps reread the book. Yes, love was a part of this book, but the role it played was more of beautifully decorated book ends that buttress a shelf of mismatched , disarrayed and complicated books. It is the book ends that keep the shelf together – keep it organized and sensible. But you could pick up each book individually, turning it around and around in your mind – perhaps even understand it. But the shelf looks so much better, appears entirely more inviting, more digestible – and frankly a thousand times more enjoyable when those worn and rigid books stand convincingly together between two beautifully delicate bookends.
